ASHA BHOSLE QUOTES

About remix albums: “Our children nowadays listen to remixes and fusions. But they should be exposed to our own music in its original forms. They should listen to classical music as well. That way, they will develop good understanding of our roots in general and music in particular.”

About the Grammy nominations: “It is the dream of an artiste to get a Grammy Award…. I am having the pleasure of receiving the award merely by the nomination.”

I never think about the past. Why waste time thinking about something I cannot change.

If we don’t put some acting in a dance song, no one would be able to dance on it.

Music is in all our minds and hearts and we are all free to sing anywhere we choose.

If you don’t try out new things, then you will be left behind.

I’m like a shark. I can’t keep still. Some call me a workaholic.

With a live audience, if you sing with the right feeling, the response you get is a high, an excitement. There’s nothing in the studio that can give you anything quite like that.

I used to like Mukeshji very much because his Hindi was excellent. It was very clear, and his pronunciation was excellent. No one could match that.

Most of my colleagues have been insulated in Indian music alone – they did not think of the world beyond what they knew – but I always did and still do.

I always enjoyed singing and working with the late Kishore Kumar. He was a legendary playback singer, an actor, and a producer/director.

I prefer films and dramas based on families and relationships – films which focus on love and harmony.

I have sung in all languages, and so every people know me – Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu.

Those who are not trained singers will find that their voice quavers. That should not happen. The quaver should be used only where necessary and not because a singer cannot hold a note or a tune.

The Seventies was a golden period for music, both around the world and in India.

It is unethical to promote old songs sung by new artistes, and the government should ban these things.

I have sung as many as 6,000 songs of various hues, be they classical, pop or folk songs. I have even performed free of charge for the Maharashtra government.

Performing in each city is a different experience. But somehow, New York is unique. It is like performing in the entertainment capital of the world.

By now, everyone knows I do not just sing standing in the middle of the stage. I also dance and get others to dance with me.

I was approached for acting roles when I was young. I had said that I look into the mirror every day and don’t think my face suits for the big screen. So I will not do the films.

I don’t run after money or fame. The only thing I have always wished is to be a classical singer.

When you don’t know how to pronounce words, when you don’t know the meaning of the words, how will you imbibe a song with feeling?

There is a gap between the heart and brain – that is where the soundbox lies. Some sing from their heart; others use their brain.

Hindi film music has always been completely driven by the plot. We singers never had any say in compositions.

My songs would be nothing had it not been for my father. I follow his footsteps.

In the old days, all the movie songs were recorded right there on set.

The truth is, I’ve got a naturally outgoing nature, and I still have a great love for experimentation.

With singing, you get lost in the music – I go into another world when I’m singing.

Only when you know the nuances of a language can you sing a song well.

I have brought up my kids single-handedly. So, a strenuous routine is something I thrive on, not shy away from.

Lata Mangeshkar is Lata Mangeshkar. Nobody can ever touch her.

People forget how the same children brought up with affection, effort, and love are the ones who later kick their parents.

Singing is my first love.

ASHA BHOSLE CONTROVERSIES

asha bhosle le gayiThe hedonistic anthem “Dum Maaro Dum,” written by RD Burman and hummed by Asha for a sensual Zeenat Aman extolling the benefits of hashish, challenged conventional notions of morality and music. Even though the movie’s plot was anti-drug, Air India Radio nonetheless decided to ban the song.

D. Burman (Asha’s husband) was once accused of singing nasally by Bollywood singer Himesh Reshammiya. If somebody says Burman Sa’ab sung through his nose, he should be smacked, Asha retorted in response to this.
