On March 12, 1984, in Murshidabad, West Bengal, a Bengali family gave birth to Shreya Ghoshal. She was raised in the nearby village of Rawatbhata in the state of Rajasthan. Her father, Bishwajit Ghoshal, is an electrical engineer who works for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, and her mother, Sarmistha Ghoshal, is a post-graduate in literature. After her father was transferred to the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in 1997, she and her family relocated to Mumbai, where she attended the Atomic Energy Central School in Anushakti Nagar. She registered for a science course at the Atomic Energy Institute Junior College. She left the junior college and enrolled at Mumbai’s SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, where she concentrated in the fine arts and took English as a second language. She dropped out of the junior college.

When Ghoshal was in rehearsal, her mother would help her out and accompany her on the Tanpura, initially playing mostly Bengali music. At the age of six, Ghoshal began formal instruction in classical music. She studied classical music for 18 months with the late Kalyanji Bhai before continuing her studies with the late Mukta Bhide in Mumbai. She gave her debut performance at a club’s yearly gathering. At age six, she started taking classes in Hindustani classical music. At the age of sixteen, she participated in and took home the victory in the Zee TV television tunes reality competition Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa).

Devdas’ Dola Re Dola won the Best Female Playback Singer award at the 2003 Filmfare Awards.
